The night shift at the harbor is mostly waiting, and waiting is where things surface.
He works the gate. Nine at night until five in the morning, four nights a week. Between the trucks there is a lot of nothing: the water moving against the pilings, a light on the far side going on and off for no reason anybody has ever established, the smell of diesel and salt that gets into a coat and stays.
And in that nothing, most nights, something comes up in him that has no words attached to it.
I want to describe it accurately because I think you know it. It is not a thought. If it were a thought he could examine it. It comes up through the chest and it makes a sound in the throat that never becomes a word, and it is about a thing he did, and about what that thing cost somebody, and about a stretch of years, and about how you go on being an ordinary man afterwards.
He has never once found the sentence for it. Not in six years. He has tried, in the way you try to remember a name, and it never comes.
And because it has never become a sentence, he has concluded that it has never been brought to God.
That is the whole tragedy of his night shift. He believes there is a queue, and that things get into the queue by being said properly, and that the biggest thing in his life has been sitting outside the queue for six years because he cannot articulate it. So he prays about smaller things, which he can word, and the large wordless one stays in his chest and comes up between the trucks.
I want to name the wound before I say anything hopeful, because a lift that arrives too early is not worth much. The wound is this: somewhere you learned that what cannot be said does not count. Perhaps in a house where feelings had to be presented before they were attended to. And you have carried it into your prayers, and it has left the heaviest thing you own outside the conversation.
That is you at the gate.
You've been praying about the manageable things for years. The real one has never made it into language, and you have taken that as evidence that it has never been received.

He hears the groaning, which arrives before language does
David writes a line that I do not think gets read often enough, and it is aimed exactly here.
Lord, all my desire is before thee; and my groaning is not hid from thee.Psalm 38:9
My groaning. Not my account. Not my confession, well made. The Hebrew word is the sound a body makes under weight, and David puts it in front of God as a thing already received, already known, already not hidden.
You have already been heard in the part of this that has never had words, and I am not softening the standard: Psalm 38:9 says the groaning is not hidden, in writing, and it is the Holy Spirit rather than my saying it who can bring that to a man on a gate at three in the morning.
Now hold the two halves of that verse together, because the order matters. All my desire is before thee comes first, and then the groaning. Desire, in that sense, is the whole of what a person wants and cannot organize. It is already before Him. Not submitted. Before Him, the way the sea is before the shore.
Which means there is no queue and never was. You have been imagining an office where things are received on submission, and Scripture describes something completely different: a God in front of whom the unspoken is already lying, in full, without a form having been filled in.
You have nothing sitting outside the conversation, and six years of wordlessness put nothing on hold, which is written in the psalm rather than being my sympathy for a hard shift, with the Spirit of God able to lift something that argument cannot reach.
There is more, and it belongs here. Paul writes that when we do not know what to pray for, the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Same word family. The thing you cannot say is not merely heard; it is carried, from inside you, by God Himself, in exactly the form you have been ashamed of.
This is yours right now, wordless, in the sound your chest makes between the trucks, because Scripture puts the groaning in front of God already, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is doing the carrying rather than waiting for a better sentence.
The water, the light and the salt in your coat are all His handiwork and none of them are the ones keeping your account. Neither is He.
It was never outside.
The heaviest thing you own has been in front of God for six years, in the exact wordless form it takes at three in the morning, and the reason it never entered the conversation in words is that it did not need to.
There is no submission process. There is no queue where the well worded ones are seen first. David put the groaning itself in front of God and called it not hidden, and Paul says the Spirit carries that same sound from inside a person when the person has nothing to say.
You are heard in the sound and not only in the sentence, and the wordlessness you have been ashamed of is the form God Himself carries, because Psalm 38:9 says it is not hid, and the Holy Spirit is the one making that a place you can rest rather than a verse you find kind.
Make the sound. That is a prayer. It has been a prayer for six years.
Declare this over yourself
Say them out loud, in whatever voice this shift has left you, and a rough one is welcome. The standing to say them is not something a man works up to and it is not on loan from a better week: Christ is in you, and the authority in these words belongs to Him and has been given to you in Scripture, made living by the Holy Spirit rather than by your ability to explain. Jesus put the faith required at a mustard seed, which is His way of setting it under the line where anybody would trouble to measure, and then He said the part that carries: speak to the mountain. The mountain here is not the thing itself. It is the belief that what cannot be said does not count. Speak to that. What He does with the rest of it He does in His own way, and the opening of the hand is yours to do tonight.
- Wordlessness I have been ashamed of, you are not a locked door, and in the name of Jesus I stop apologizing for you. Scripture says my groaning is not hidden from God, so the sound my chest makes at three in the morning has been the prayer all along.
- Fear that the biggest thing in my life is sitting outside the queue, you have had six years of night shifts out of me and you are finished. Scripture says all my desire is already before Him, so there is no office, no form and no order of submission for you to threaten me with.
- Lord God, You have had the whole weight of this in front of You since the first night, in the only form I could ever give it, and I am opening my hand to You now with nothing said. I thank You, because Your Holy Spirit did the carrying and Your word called the groaning heard, and I am received in the sound and not at the end of a sentence I was never going to find.
