Anybody who cans will tell you the same thing: once it seals, leave it alone.
You do the work. You get the jars hot, you fill them, you wipe the rim, because a bit of anything on the rim will stop it. You put the lid on and the ring on and you process them, and then you set them on a towel on the counter and you wait, and one by one they go off like little gunshots as the lids pull down.
That sound is the whole thing. That is the seal happening. After that the jar will sit on a shelf for two years and be perfectly good, and nothing needs doing to it.
Now, there was a woman I knew of who could not leave them.
She did everything right. Her rims were clean and her processing times were correct and she heard every one of those lids pop. And then, a week later, she would take one down and open it. To check.
And you know what happens when you open a sealed jar. It is not sealed any more. You have to use it that day or it goes over. The only thing in the world that could have spoiled that jar was the woman who put it up.
She lost a lot of good food that way over the years, and she was not careless, and that is the part people find hard to understand. She was the most careful woman on that road. The carefulness was the problem. Care that does not know when a thing is finished turns into the thing that undoes it.
And every one of those jars she opened had sealed. Every single one. Not one time in all those years did she take a lid off and find something wrong. She had a perfect record of checking, and a perfect record of finding it sound, and it never once made the next week any easier.
That is you at the shelf.
You brought something to God and it sealed. You heard it go. And then a week later you took it down to check, and the checking undid the rest you had, and the only thing that has ever disturbed that jar is you taking the lid off to make sure.
The writer of Hebrews argues from the repeating
There is a line in Hebrews that most people read past, and it is doing something clever. The writer is making a case, and he uses the repeating itself as his evidence.
For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins.Hebrews 10:2
Read the logic. If the old sacrifices had actually finished the job, he says, they would have stopped, because a person who has been genuinely purged would not still be carrying a conscience about the same thing.
That is his test for whether something worked: does it end the repeating?
And then he applies it. The old system repeated, therefore it was not finished. What Christ did does not repeat, therefore it is. And the conclusion he draws for people like you is right there in his own sentence: the once purged should have no more conscience of sins.
You have been purged once, and the no more conscience is not a suggestion about how to feel, it is the writer's own description of what happened to you, and I am not going soft here: Hebrews 10:2 argues it out in writing, and it is the Holy Spirit rather than my saying so who can get that into a woman standing at a shelf.
Now I want to be plain about something, because this is a real distinction and people miss it. There is a kind of conscience that is God at work in you about something live, right now, and that is a good thing and I would never talk you out of it. What the verse is describing is different. It is the conscience that keeps returning to a matter already dealt with, and the writer says the once purged should have no more of that.
One is a hand on your shoulder about today. The other is somebody taking lids off jars from last summer.
You have a settled matter and a live life, and telling those two apart is most of the peace available to a careful person, which is written into the chapter's own argument rather than being my opinion of your week, with the Spirit of God able to give a careful woman that discernment where thirty years of care could not.
Here is the plainest way I can put it. The seal is not maintained by checking. It is maintained by the vacuum, which was made in the processing, and the processing is done. Your checking has never been the thing keeping it good. It has been the only thing capable of ruining it.
This sealed the first time, and the pop you heard was real, because Scripture says once purged, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying that into a kitchen in the late afternoon.
Leave the lid alone.
It sealed. You heard it seal. And in all these years of taking jars down there has not been one occasion when you found something wrong, because there has not been anything wrong, because the processing was not done by you and it was done properly.
The writer of Hebrews will not even let you keep the conscience about it. He says the once purged should have no more conscience of sins, and he says it as a plain consequence and not as an aspiration.
You are purged once and finished, and the returning conscience about it is the checking rather than the caring, because Hebrews 10:2 uses the ending of the repeating as its own proof, and the Holy Spirit is the one making that a place to rest rather than a point to concede.
Put it back on the shelf. Use it at the holidays.
Declare this over yourself
Say them out loud, in whatever voice this afternoon has left you, and a plain one is right. The standing to say them is not something a person works up to and it does not come off her record: Christ is in you, and the authority in these words belongs to Him and has been given to you in Scripture, made living by the Holy Spirit rather than by how carefully you check. Jesus put the faith required at a mustard seed, which is His way of setting it under the line where anybody would trouble to measure, and then He said the part that carries: speak to the mountain. The mountain here is not what is in the jar. It is the checking. Speak to that. What He does with the rest of it He does in His own way, and the unclenching is yours to do this afternoon.
- Checking I keep doing, you are not care, and in the name of Jesus I leave the lid alone. Scripture says the once purged should have no more conscience of it, and the only hand that ever broke that seal was mine.
- Fear that a thing left alone might have failed, you have had thirty years of good food off me and you have never once been right. Scripture argues that a finished work ends the repeating, so the repeating was the evidence and not the safeguard.
- Lord God, You did the processing and the seal pulled down the first time, and I am sitting here with both hands open and nothing to take off a shelf. I thank You, because Your Holy Spirit did the settling and Your word said once purged, and I am received at the leaving alone and not at the end of one more inspection.
